Reducing Maternal and Newborn Deaths – MDGs 4 & 5

Maternal and newborn deaths remain all too common in low income countries. The millennium development goal for reduction of maternal deaths (MDG5) is unlikely to be met by the target date of 2015. MDG4 (reduction of childhood deaths) won’t be achieved unless neonatal deaths can be reduced. The Study Group addressed the complex social, economic and clinical causes of maternal and neonatal mortality. Practical clinical and organisational solutions were identified. The need for advocacy, training and appropriate resource allocation will be discussed. Maternal and neonatal deaths need to be considered as inter-related problems.
