MIDIRS announces launch of exciting new monthly journal

.. an innovative, evidence-based learning resource for maternity health care professionals and students.

MIDIRS is pleased to announce the launch of Essentially MIDIRS, a new, independent, monthly publication for individuals and member associations involved in the care of pregnant women, new mothers and babies.

Available from 1st June 2010, Essentially MIDIRS will be edited by well known midwife, author, teacher and researcher, Sara Wickham, and looks set to become a serious consideration for those searching for an evidence-based information learning resource to support them in their practice and studies. Visit www.midirs.org/em for a complete overview of the journal.

The new 54 page colour journal will form an intrinsic part of MIDIRS portfolio of educational resources, all of which aim to support the charity’s mission of assisting in the improvement of maternity care for mothers and babies worldwide.

Sara, who has practised midwifery in the USA and UK, in home birth, birth centre and hospital settings, as well as teaching and researching midwifery said ‘I am delighted to be joining MIDIRS in the launch of Essentially MIDIRS. MIDIRS is a unique charity which offers a range of services to those who care for and about women, babies and families, including a Reference Database which is updated on a daily basis’.

‘Such services are invaluable in an age where information is expanding faster than individuals can keep up with it. Essentially MIDIRS is the latest addition to this range, and it will bring together and comment upon the newest, most relevant information from MIDIRS Reference Database while also offering a range of original articles, debates and features. I am excited by the possibilities of this new project and really looking forward to working with the team at MIDIRS’.

Comprised of 11 issues per year, one of the publication’s key contributions to the maternity profession will be to assist practitioners in maintaining their personal portfolio development, fitness for practice, and in identifying and meeting NMC PREP requirements. It will be an invaluable learning resource for supporting individuals within their practice and studies.

This will be achieved by providing access to a wide range of evidence-based original articles, abstracts and commentaries on the latest research and hot topics surrounding maternity issues. Frequent summaries of recent Cochrane reports and Department of Health guidelines and initiatives will regularly feature. Original woman-centred stories and reflections providing a focus on women’s and midwives' knowledge and experiences from a variety of perspectives and different cultures will also be included. Full details can be found by visiting www.midirs.org/em.

Essentially MIDIRS aims to meet the requirements of a wide range of maternity health care professionals and is not limited to members of any one group within the spectrum of maternity care. It is a key resource for individuals and member associations involved in the care of pregnant women, new mothers and babies including:

  • midwives in practice, research, education or management
  • midwifery students
  • supervisors of midwives
  • midwifery educators
  • childbirth educators
  • doulas
  • maternity health care support workers
  • antenatal teachers, postnatal group leaders and breastfeeding counsellors
  • health visitors
  • GPs, obstetricians and other medical staff and students
  • ...and anyone else involved in caring for childbearing women and their families.
