Midwifery Digest only
MIDIRS Midwifery Digest is the essential resource to keep you up to date with the latest news, views and hot topics in the world of midwifery.
MIDIRS Midwifery Digest is a quarterly publication consisting of 136 pages of news, reviews, original articles and reprints of the best maternity and infant care information from journals around the world. Over 500 international English language journals, websites, books, pamphlets, government reports, conference proceedings and other sources are regularly scanned and selected for inclusion in the Digest.
The Midwifery Digest will be of interest not only to midwives and students but also to other health professionals and non-statutory agencies involved in the care of women and their babies in pregnancy, during and after childbirth and up to the first year of life.
The Digest features original articles and reprints which are all fully referenced, as well as a number of critical reviews of recently published research studies. Our aim is to help you to broaden your knowledge and skills for your professional academic development, as well as increase your confidence in your day-to-day practice. You can also contribute to the information in the Digest by submitting articles about practice, education and research that you have been involved in or that interests you. Just complete our online submission form.
All of MIDIRS subscriptions include a copy of the Digest in the post each quarter. But you can also gain access to over 165,000 article references, news and reviews online with a subscription to the Online Service (OLS) or with a MIDIRS Gold membership.
Articles in each issue are highlighted for use as part of your professional portfolio, and also include links to the MIDIRS Informed Choice resource. These articles will not only provide you with a cost effective option to earn PREP accreditation, but the opportunity to:
- maintain and plan your professional updating
- reflect on your practice and examine local policies and procedures
- promote discussion with your colleagues.
Why subscribe?

Online Service
The MIDIRS Online Service (OLS) combines a MIDIRS Midwifery Digest subscription and online access to the MIDIRS Reference Database, making it the most complete midwifery information resource available today.
First developed in 1988, the MIDIRS Reference Database has grown in size and stature with around 500 international English language journals being regularly scanned for inclusion in the database.
The database is an amalgamation of references to journal articles, book chapters, reports, pamphlets, news items, audio-visual materials, conference proceedings and other ‘grey literature’ relating to the midwifery profession, pregnancy, labour, birth, postnatal care, and neonatal care extending into the first year of life.
Approximately 1000 records are added to the database per month. There are now over 165,000 records on the database, and its reputation as a powerful research tool for health care professionals around the globe continues to grow.
Key topics include:
- Antenatal health issues
- Complementary therapies
- Employment issues
- Ethical and professional issues
- Health care professionals' role
- Health education
- HIV
- Hospital policies
- International midwifery
- Intensive care
- Neonatal care
- Screening
- Social and psychological aspects
- Sudden infant death and infant mortality.
The level of record enhancement has also increased with every reference on the database assigned keywords, an abstract (if an author-written abstract is not available), categorization by item type, and allocation to one of over 812 standard searches covering topical themes.
A team of qualified information professionals carry out the record enhancement work.
