Search Packs
Our Reference Database is huge (it currently consists of almost 200,000 midwifery articles), so we’re keen to make it easier for you to get straight to the content you need.
Subscribers to our Reference Database are free to search to their heart’s content, but if you can’t find what you need or simply don’t have the time to look (or aren’t a subscriber), then you can order one of our topic-based Search Packs.
Reference Database subscribers can view these for free – and tweak them to suit their needs – simply by logging in and navigating to the Search Pack tab.

What are Search Packs?All our articles are automatically arranged into groups with other relevant articles – giving you quick and easy access to everything we have on a certain topic. For example, if an article about the safety of home birth lands on the desk of one of our Information Team members, they will assign it the code ‘MS5′ – which would direct it straight into the Home birth – safety Search Pack. If you were to then order that particular Pack, you would receive the details of that article along with the many others our Information Team would have assigned to it. Each Search Pack provides you with a list of bibliographic references and article abstracts that help you decide if an article fits your needs. You can then use this list of references to source full text from your university or workplace library, or to order photocopies direct from MIDIRS.
What sort of topics are covered?Almost everything you can think of – across more than 550 individual Search Packs. From broad topics such as Breastfeeding (we’ve got more than 50 of these), to more specialist interest topics such as aromatherapy, midwifery in various parts of the world, and even dummies and pacifiers! Each Pack is limited to a maximum of 250 articles to ensure you aren’t swamped by information – when that limit is reached, older articles drop into an ‘archive’ version of the Pack, which will also be available to order.
What do I get?Subscribers to our Reference Database can view Search Packs as a series of interactive results, which they can filter to suit their requirements (by date or by source, for instance), access full-text articles where available, and order photocopies of articles we have stored in our library. Non-subscribers will be emailed a PDF of the Search Pack, from which they will be able to access freely available articles online, or order full text direct from us.
Why don’t I get full-text articles?Where articles are freely available online, we will
provide a clickable link to the relevant website. Unfortunately, the costs of supplying downloadable full-text of articles that aren’t freely available are prohibitive. If we paid for the licenses that would enable us to offer this service then our subscription rates would skyrocket. We would rather offer midwifery’s most comprehensive reference database for a much better price – giving you the option to order article photocopies directly from us or seek them out at your university or workplace library.
How much do they cost?For subscribers to our Reference Database, Search Packs are absolutely free to view and print. If you are not a subscriber to the Database, you can order Search Packs for a cost of £9.95.
