The profile of contemporary midwifery care and the implications for statutory supervision
Date Posted: 5/6/2007

Description:
Val gives a review of midwifery through the ages and looks at what has changed. She then focuses on statutory supervision from 1902 to the present day and looks at the changes and developments here too. The main focus of the session is around current day practice (encompassing everything from independent midwifery to community care and acute service provision) and looks at the way that supervision of midwives can assist in day to day work of the midwife – helping to prepare for new developments and challenging practice.

Profile

Val qualified as a midwife in 1981, working in a variety of locations and in different roles. She was designated as a Supervisor of Midwives in 1986 and has been LSA Midwifery Officer since 1999. Val has worked as Midwife Assessor for maternal deaths (CEMACH) since 1991. She is keen to identify risks in the care of women and aid the practice of midwives and other professionals raising the profile of situations and helping to provide additional training and awareness through this role. Val is well placed to discuss the profile of current contemporary midwifery practice, and is keen to demonstrate how supervision of midwives can support and enhance the practitioner’s role, whilst also attaining optimum levels of safety for mothers and babies. She will discuss contemporary midwifery practice in all its different guises and hopes to challenge current thinking about provision of care.
