NCT response to new rules on cord blood collection - 04/30/2008
Belinda Phipps, Chief Executive, NCT, said;
“We welcome this move and are delighted to see these safeguards put in place. It is vital that the birth and immediate post birth period is not disrupted and that the midwife is not distracted from her primary role. It is important that cord blood collection, where it takes place, is done to minimise the risks to mother and baby. Care must be taken not to deprive the baby of blood from the cord or placenta. It is also important that, if parents choose to have a sample taken in the hope that science will advance enough to make effective use of it, that the sample remained identifiable and in a viable condition.”
