In a double launch of our new Focus On… feature, we give the floor to Little Things, a wonderful non-profit organisation that makes clothes for little babies who have sadly passed away.…
Established: March 2013
Explain the name: We chose ‘Little Things’ for two reasons. Firstly because of the size of the items we make, and secondly because at a time of bereavement it’s very often the little things people do to help that matter the most.
Slogan: Tiny clothes for precious souls.
Mission statement: Providing clothing for angel babies too tiny to fit standard clothes. Our aim is to ensure all babies are given the basic human right of being dressed as they are laid to rest.
Tell us about some of your products and services: We make pouches for miscarried babies and tiny outfits for premature babies to be laid to rest in. These can range from very simple items, or tailored to individual requirements with different colours, characters and themes.
Give us a brief history of Little Things: The non-profit organisation was set up as a result of my experiences working as a funeral director. I found babies who had died were arriving wrapped in just blankets and in some cases tissue paper. One particular family were deeply distressed that their little one was not dressed, but all standard clothing was far too big. I made a small vest and the idea has spiraled from there. We now provide pouches to early pregnancy units, The Miscarriage Association, and also make bespoke outfits for second and third trimester babies for individual families.
What has Little Things been up to this month?: Making 600 pouches for a Scottish branch of Sands, and also trying to keep warm wearing fingerless gloves in our cold workshop!
Any plans for the future? To expand the amount of hospitals and groups we provide to. We’re also planning some fundraising events to purchase an embroidery machine so items can be personalised.
Did you know? With every item comes three keepsake hearts. One is placed in the baby’s hand, one is for parents to keep in a memory box and the third, bearing the child’s name, is placed on the LT memory tree in our office.
How is Little Things funded? At the moment we fund everything, but we are planning to register as a charity shortly to ensure people can donate to our cause.
