The online resource provides an overview of clinical assessment and comprehensive management strategies for cardiovascular disease based on risk factors and presenting symptoms.
It also provides educational hand-outs that can be given to women with cardiovascular disease on contraception and planning pregnancy.
The e-Toolkit has been created by the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) in Pregnancy and Postpartum Task Force.
In the US, cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in the country, with a report on maternal deaths in California stating that only a small fraction of women who died knew they had the disease.
The report suggests 25% of maternal deaths could have been preventable if women’s symptoms were assessed, diagnosed and treated quicker.
The e-Toolkit is available for midwives and maternity support workers to use as a resources for women during prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum periods. It can be downloaded here.
Teaching slides for professionals is also available to download here.
A webinar will be held on January 18 2018 introducing the new California Maternal Quality Toolkit on Cardiovascular Disease in Pregnancy, presented by Co-Chair of the CVD Task Force, Dr Afshan Hameed.
