Normal Birth Date: 08/07/2008, Time: Amended time 14.00 GMT, Places Available: Unlimited. The normal childbirth agenda is alive and well in the UK in 2008. Examples of innovative models are growing. An evidence paradigm is supportive of normal birth in the main. However, preference in evidence statements are given to results from quantitative research studies like randomised controlled trials. Though these can answer of clinical effectiveness, they don’t address women’s preferences, expectations and values around the childbirth experience. Neither do they address the context in which care takes place. For an appreciation of these deeper contextual aspects of normal birth care and experience, broader concepts are needed. Sociological critique of western childbirth assists us in addressing these dimensions. They explore discourses like medicalisation, institutionalised birth and risk.
The application of evidence to practice in such a complex physiological, psycho-social event requires a broader view of evidence, drawing on experience, intuition, ancient wisdom and birth physiology.
These areas will be discussed and elaborated on.

Place of Birth Date: 24/04/2008, Time: 14.00 GMT, Places Available: Unlimited. Reframing the place of birth debate: from professional project to authentic choice
This presentation will explore the evidence base around various places of birth, and examine some of the controversies in this area. It will focus specifically on the possibility that, at least in some cases, professional groups may have become highly polarized in the debate between in and out of hospital birth. Soo will explore evidence that suggests that the wellbeing of some women and babies might be at risk during in-fighting between these two extreme positions. She will then examine factors that may encourage a move towards effective multidisciplinary collaboration between birthplace boundaries, based on trust and mutual respect. Contact: vicky@midirs.org. Cup feeding revisited - Webinar with Sharon Trotter Date: This Webniar was held on 24/07/2007, Time: N/A, Places Available: N/A. Following the successful webinar; ‘Skin deep: neonatal skin/cord care’, in February this year, we are pleased to invite Sharon Trotter, Midwife, mother and author, back to present her work on cup feeding. Whilst researching lidded/sippy style cup feeding, Sharon was surprised to discover the many possible hazards associated with this hitherto innocuous practice. These include not only the emotional effects but also the potential to affect oral health, speech/jaw development and a risk of iron deficiency anaemia. The establishment of good eating habits is the key to good nutrition and modern day lidded cups have the potential to negatively affect this transition. There is no doubt this could be viewed as a contentious issue when you bear in mind industry wide sales of lidded cups that run into £millions. Contact: vicky@midirs.org. presenter's book: 'Introduction to Research for Midwives'. If you find it difficult to know what to
